Kenya began their U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-0 loss against England in the tournament held in the Dominican Republic.
The match took place at the Cibao FC Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros. England opened the scoring 29 minutes into the game with a penalty, which Lola Sangita Brown successfully converted. Lauryn Ida Belle Thompson sealed the victory for England with a second goal in the 87th minute.
Despite the defeat, Kenya’s coach, Mildred Cheche, praised the Junior Starlets for their resilience, stating: “Although we lost our opening match, I am happy that the team gave their best but made a few mistakes, especially defensively. We must now prepare for the next match against Korea DPR.”
North Korea currently leads Group C with a goal difference of +3, followed by England in second, Kenya in third, and Mexico in fourth.
Kenya will face North Korea on Sunday, October 20th, in a must-win match. A loss would put Kenya at serious risk of not qualifying for the quarter-finals.
