Ecuadorian footballer Marco Ángulo has tragically passed away at the age of 22 following a car accident.
Ángulo, a midfielder, had built an impressive career playing for Independiente Juniors, Independiente del Valle, and FC Cincinnati, and was currently on loan at L.D.U. Quito from the American club.
He was an instrumental part of Independiente del Valle’s success in 2022, helping the club to victories in both the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Ecuador.
The accident, which occurred on October 7 in Quito, Ecuador’s capital, also claimed the lives of two others: Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a defender for Independiente Juniors, and Victor Charcopa Nazareno. Ángulo died as a result of his injuries shortly afterward.
LDU Quito expressed their profound grief in a statement on X, saying, “It is with profound pain and sadness that we bring you the news of the death of our player, Marco Angulo. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts. May he rest in peace.”
Ángulo had represented the Ecuadorian national team three times. The Ecuadorian Football Federation also shared a message of condolence on X: “With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to have to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo.”
