West Ham United earned their fourth Premier League victory of the season with a commanding 2-0 win over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
The Hammers took an early lead in the 10th minute when Tomáš Souček headed home a well-delivered set piece from Emerson Palmieri. New signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka sealed the win with a composed finish in the 53rd minute, giving West Ham a vital three points.
Under-pressure West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, he said:
“We are happy. I think we played well, with a clear identity, and managed to overcome a very good team. They started strongly, but it’s always important to gain confidence in matches like these.”
He added:
“I believe we deserved the win. While Newcastle had their moments in the first half, I think we dominated the second half and earned this result. Matches like this are crucial if you want to compete at the highest level.”
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe acknowledged his side’s missed opportunities, stating:
“We were dominant in the first half, and the game could have gone differently if we had equalized before halftime. Up until the 60th minute, I was relatively pleased, but the last 30 minutes were disappointing. We tried too hard to force a goal, which left us vulnerable. We’ll regret those missed chances when we review the match. Nothing surprises me in the Premier League – every team has its strengths.”
The defeat marked Newcastle’s fourth loss of the league campaign, leaving them with 18 points from 12 matches and a goal difference of zero. Howe will need to turn Newcastle’s Premier League form around before the situation gets out of hand.
