In Abidjan, Nigeria and Benin shared the spoils, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Nigeria had already secured qualification for AFCON 2025 before the match, following Libya’s surprise victory over Rwanda in Kigali.
Benin took an early lead in the 16th minute when Tijani capitalized on an error by Nigerian goalkeeper Nwabali, scoring a goal that might have been prevented if the mistake hadn’t occurred. Despite dominating possession, the Super Eagles struggled to create clear opportunities. Their one significant chance in the first half fell to Victor Osimhen, who headed wide while unmarked in front of the goalkeeper, as Benin’s low-block defense proved challenging to break down.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Benin maintaining a resolute defensive stance. However, a tactical substitution by Nigerian coach Augustine Eguavoen brought Moses Simon into the game, a move that ultimately made the difference. In the 81st minute, Simon delivered a perfect cross that Osimhen headed into the net, leveling the score for Nigeria.
Osimhen’s goal marked his 23rd for Nigeria, drawing him level with Segun Odegbami on the national team’s all-time scorers list, with only Rashidi Yekini ahead of him.
The match concluded at 1-1, ensuring Nigeria’s position at the top of Group D with one game to spare. Their final group match is set for Monday in Uyo against Rwanda. For Rwanda to qualify for AFCON 2025, they must defeat Nigeria and hope that Benin loses their final match.
