The general overseer of the Redeem Christian Church Of God (RCCG) is facing heavy criticism from social media users, after he emphasized in a video that it was through intercession that a dollar had not been equivalent to N10, 000.
“If we had not prayed, $1 would have been ₦10,000 by now. God stepped in and saved Nigeria” -Pastor Adeboye had said in the video.
The pastor further credited the economy hardship prevailing the country to oil marketers whom he stated had been the reasons behind the devaluation of Nigeria’s currency rather than the present administration effort in making life unbearable for its citizens.
“Before our president came in, everybody knew that the major reason why we were having financial problems, (we’ve been having it before he came in), is the fact that a lot of money was being spent to import petrol .
“Can we be importing petrol when we have it in abundance here, we spent billions of naira on our refineries, they didn’t work so that we can be able to keep on importing. That’s why when the president came in (the very first day he came) , he said the money they used in importing petrol, he says he cancelled it.
“We were all rejoicing, thanking God but some people were angry, those who were making money from importing petrol and they decided (okay, we will create a problem) and all of a sudden naira began to go down fast.
“I cried to my people, let us pray , thank God some people joined me, we prayed because the way naira was going then, if God had not intervene by now one dollar would have been about 10, 000 naira but God stepped in.” he reasoned
Recall the RCCG Overseer had allegedly in 2012 during Goodluck Enebeli Jonathan’s administration protested against fuel hike.
However netizens are not taking it easy on the 82-year-old man, emphasizing its high time he stepped back and retired from the ministry, rather than support the incapability of the government to pull the country back from the edge of woes it’s tilting toward and neither does prayers have significant effect on exchange rate.
Inibehe Effiong a Public Interest and Human Rights lawyer had posted: “Pastor Enoch Adeboye should retire and go home. His controversial statements on the state of the nation offends the sensibilities of right thinking members of the society. In life, it is always better to know when to exit the stage.
“The fact that Adeboye is holding brief for this incompetent and oppressive government is a mockery of Christianity. Many people in our country have stopped going to Church due to the sickening hypocrisy and connivance of these religious leaders.
“Tinubu has paid billions in fuel subsidy, contrary to his public statements. Tinubu’s government has not addressed the rot and corruption in the oil sector. We are not all naive and gullible. It is preposterous for Adeboye to say that it is his prayers that has made the Naira not to depreciate further.
“Prayers do not have any effect on the exchange rate. Exchange rate is determined by economic and monetary policies, and the productivity of a country. Adeboye has been praying for decades for Nigeria and Nigerian politicians and things haven’t improved.
“It is either his prayers are not working or God is not listening to him. Some of the most corrupt and evil politicians and political leaders in our country today are disciples and followers of Pastor Adeboye. He should look himself in the mirror.” He added.
It further look as if the Adeboye’s statement may have a negative effect on struggling Christians whose political and economic interest does not align with the overseer’s view while a user stated that he would have to inquire from a prospective employee his/her church affiliation, as this will be a determinant of employment
@Urchilla01: “If I criticise Pastor Adeboye, it does not make me less of a Christian. I worship God, not man or any pastor. Pastor Adeboye is a two-faced, mischievous, swindling old man who is a part of the pillars used to enshrine institutional docility in Nigerian citizens.”
@AjeboDanny: “I’ve started asking my potential employees if they attend RCCG during Job interview because there’s no way i can trust you to make good decisions if Adeboye is your pastor.”
iRoyalty: “ What Pastor Adeboye did is enough to make a struggling Christian lose his faith. Let’s be honest. It was manipulative and there was no iota of truth in it. Jeeeez! I’m livid. As a matter of fact, I’m done. Bye for now.”
@dangbanamanager: “Adeboye is 81 years old I believe he’s done enough as RCCG’s leader It’s time to bow out as gracefully as possible and leave the pulpit His time is up 43 years of preaching, the work is done. RCCG should save whatever is left of his legacy and usher him into retirement.”
