Sam Kerr, the Chelsea star, and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, a West Ham midfielder, on Monday shared their pregnancy news with the football world – they are expecting their first child in 2025.
The couple made the announcement through Instagram post on Kerr’s account: “Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” with Mewis, 33, revealed to be carrying the baby.
Fans, players, and both of their clubs quickly flooded the couple’s social media with congratulations. West Ham posted, “A huge congratulations to Kristie and her partner Sam,” and Chelsea shared similar messages of support.
Kerr, 31, is one of the top stars in women’s football. She holds the record as Australia’s all-time top scorer and is well-known in the Women’s Super League. Although she is currently taking a break from playing due to a knee injury, this happy news brings a bright spot to her year.
Kerr and Mewis have been together since 2021 and are one of football’s most loved couples. Before Mewis, Kerr was in a relationship with her former teammate Nikki Stanton.
However, not all reactions to their announcement have been positive. Some hateful comments on social media have brought attention to the ongoing issue of homophobia in football.
@Yemi_d_KeyKing: “Call me homophobic or whatever, but if you decide to go against the natural order of conception, you shouldn’t be afforded the opportunity of having a child. Its selfishness and a means of “eating your cake and having it”!
@SOTesleem: “The child they’ll give birth to may end up wishing s/he is not part of all of these. I for one would detest the thought of calling two women my parents.”
@Blazethecurious: “It’s rubbish to be honest, going to probably ruin an innocent child’s outlook on life. The whole point of marriage was to sort of build a stronghold around procreation, so that the 2 people [man & woman] would be bound to certain responsibilities to themselves and to the humans they create. -1 +1 =0 [equilibrium] -1 – 1 = – 2 [ catastrophy]”
@AhanotuIkenna: “Funny thing is that, the baby will only have the genes of the man who donated his sperm and that of the mother who got pregnant. These people are just dumb and I hope they wake up someday.”
@08STRETFORD: “People just say like “ahh why do you even care when they don’t even bother you” Yes I care.. The child is gonna be fatherless and every child needs a father figure in his/her life dads are so vital for a healthy family. Going against nature is not always good.”
@uttarosam: “I live in a developing country where people follow so called “natural order” but still many such natural parents are just parents. They give birth and hope for the best. They are actually awful parents. So what does that tell you ? Just because its natual does not mean its best.”
@maxxiecfc: “These comments are so not it, heterosexual couples who struggle to conceive do exactly the same thing – egg and sperm donors exist!! I just know this baby will be so so loved by Sam, Kristie, their families and the fans.”
@CricketKenway: “Imagine being born into one of football’s most iconic couples. Huge congratulations to the soon to be moms.”
@LaFutboleraa: “No need for a father, the newborn will have two moms. Congratulations to you both, I don’t personally like Kerr but I wish all the best in this new chapter of your life. Congrats to the moms to be!!”
GaryAnd52713996: “I assume they’re expecting someone else’s baby.”
