Rodrigo Bentancur Handled A Seven Games Ban And £100,000 Fine After Racial Slur Against Team Mate Son Heung-Min

Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-game ban by the FA following a racially insensitive comment directed at his Tottenham teammate and South Korea captain, Son Heung-min. The Uruguayan international made the remark during a television appearance in his homeland.

When asked about obtaining Son’s shirt, Bentancur responded, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too, as they all look the same.” The comment sparked outrage among many South Koreans, prompting the midfielder to issue a public apology, describing his statement as “a very bad joke.” Son accepted the apology, emphasizing their close friendship.

The FA announced the punishment on November 18, which includes a £100,000 fine alongside the suspension. While the ban rules Bentancur out of domestic fixtures until December 26, he remains eligible to feature in Tottenham’s Europa League matches. The suspended games include Premier League clashes against Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as a Carabao Cup tie against Manchester United.
