The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) revealed that social critic and activist Martin Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM) will be appearing in court today for impersonating the police.
Recall that on Thursday, VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju had stated that his client had been detained by NP: “Our client, VDM, has been detained after honoring a police invitation just like yesterday. VDM has been consistent in stating that the Nigerian Police are our friends, even when we all know they are not.”
The police had condemned the use of its uniform by VDM in one of his latest videos and ordered an investigation to determine the source of the attire.
In the video, VeryDarkMan wore a police uniform and jokingly introduced himself as a “Chief Superintendent of Police of the Online Division.”
Following the backlash that ensued from his actions, he released a video on Thursday apologizing for using attire resembling the official police uniform.
VeryDarkMan also advised Nigerians to seek proper authorization before wearing police attire to avoid misunderstandings or legal repercussions.
However, the Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi had in a press release stressed that the force is handling the case while inviting interested N igerians to follow up on the case.
His statement read: “In response to recent developments, VDM, whose real name is Mr. Martins Otse, is set to appear in court today following allegations of impersonation related to the unauthorized use of Nigeria Police Force uniforms in a viral social media video.
“The FCT Police Command is actively handling the case, underscoring the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to upholding the integrity of its symbols and preventing their misuse. Interested persons are encouraged to follow up on the proceedings as the case unfolds.”
