Arsenal beat Manchester United with a corner kick masterclass to earn Rúben Amorim’s first loss as Manchester United’s manager. The first half was goalless, with both sides having little opportunities. Manchester United had managed to keep Arsenal quiet throughout the half.
The game came alive in the 5th minute of the 2nd half when Arsenal had a corner kick. Declan Rice placed a corner, and Jurrien Timber’s header took it in.
Arsenal had the chance to double their advantage in the 61st minute through another corner. Rice crossed the ball; it touched Joshua Zirkzee’s head and was going into the net, but a last touch by Manuel Ugarte prevented the ball from entering Manchester United’s net.
Manchester United had a chance of their own to get the equalizer after De Ligt headed the ball from a Bruno Fernandes free kick, but a top-notch save by David Raya prevented the Dutchman from scoring.
Arsenal wrapped up the game in the 73rd minute with another corner masterclass. Bukayo Saka played a cross into the box; Thomas Partey headed it towards the net, it touched William Saliba’s back, and entered the net. Arsenal have now scored 22 corners this season.
Ruben Amorim praised Arsenal’s set-pieces, talking about how quality they are: “We have to understand they have years of doing that. Arsenal can change games like that. We tried to defend them with the space of two days to train, but it’s hard for every team to defend Arsenal’s set-pieces.”
The result meant that Arsenal are third in the Premier League, level on points with second-placed Chelsea and seven points away from the league leaders Liverpool. Manchester United are 11th in the Premier League this season with 5 wins, 4 draws, and 5 losses.
