Atlético Madrid came from behind to secure maximum points against Barcelona in La Liga, moving them to the summit of the table.
Pedri broke the deadlock in the 30th minute after a nice pass from Gavi inside the box, putting it past Jan Oblak. The host had the chance to double their lead after the start of the second half when Fermín López received a backheel pass from Pedri, but his effort was blocked by Oblak.
Barça thought they had a second goal when Raphinha capitalized on an Oblak error, but his shot was denied by the woodwork. Atlético Madrid’s efforts to stay in the game finally paid off in the 60th minute when Rodrigo De Paul drew Atlético Madrid level from the edge of the box.
Barça had the chance to cancel out Atlético Madrid’s equalizer in the 76th minute after a nice pass from Ferran Torres left Robert Lewandowski through on goal, but Lewandowski couldn’t connect with the ball properly, making Oblak make the save.
Raphinha found himself through on goal in the 86th minute after Pedri played a nice pass for the Brazilian, but Oblak denied him with his body.
Alexander Sørloth made Barça pay for all their missed chances in stoppage time when he found the back of the net for Atlético Madrid. De Paul started the move, running with the ball, giving it to Nahuel Molina, who crossed a low ball to Sørloth, who put it past Iñaki Peña.
Atlético Madrid is now top of La Liga, leading Barcelona by three points with a game in hand. As of November, no one saw this coming, as Barça was leading Atlético by 10 points, but a poor run of results has seen Atlético Madrid take the lead in the title race.
