A brace from England international Ivan Toney earned Al Ahli a point in their AFC Champions League tie against Iranian side Esteghlal.
Raphael Silva broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute, but Toney equalized from the spot a few minutes later. Mohammad Hossein Eslami restored Esteghlal’s lead a few minutes after the start of the second half.
Esteghlal was close to seeing the result through until the 86th minute, when the referee pointed to the spot for a foul on Fahad Al Rashidi. Ivan Toney stepped up and slotted it home calmly, taking his tally to four goals in the AFC Champions League.
Al Ahli thought they had snatched all three points when Feras Al Brikan put the ball in the back of the net, but VAR ruled the player offside.
Al Ahli remains unbeaten in the competition and has already secured their place in the round of 16. The Saudi side will shift its focus to the Saudi Pro League clash against Al-Taawoun, set to take place this weekend.
Esteghlal has five points from six matches, and with two games to spare, qualifying for the round of 16 might prove to be a difficult task for the Iranian side.
