Before kickoff, there were moments of honor as Luka Modrić and Federico Valverde presented their newly won FIFA Intercontinental Cup trophy to the Santiago Bernabéu, receiving a guard of honor in the process. Sevilla legend Jesús Navas was also given a guard of honor as he took to the pitch for the last time as a professional football player.
The match kicked off in spectacular style, with Kylian Mbappé scoring a goalazo from outside the area just 10 minutes in. Ten minutes later, Valverde doubled Real Madrid’s lead with a thunderbolt goal from outside the area. Rodrygo made it three in the 34th minute, taking his goal tally in the league to five.
Isaac Romero pulled one back for Sevilla after a nice cross from Jorge Sánchez, which was headed home by Romero. Sevilla had a chance to equalize after the start of the second half, but Aurélien Tchouaméni’s attempted play out from the back was intercepted by Stanis Idumbo, who passed the ball to Romero. However, the Spaniard fired his shot straight at Thibaut Courtois.
Brahim Díaz made it 4-1 for Real Madrid in the 53rd minute, ensuring Real Madrid secured all three points. Navas was introduced in the 65th minute for his final appearance of his professional football career, receiving a standing ovation from the Real Madrid fans.
Dodi Lukebakio gave the away fans something to cheer about after scoring in the 85th minute, but the goal ultimately proved to be a consolation. After the full-time whistle, there were warm embraces for Navas, who played his last game as a professional footballer. The 37-year-old broke down in tears as he was comforted by his teammates.
Real Madrid sits second in LaLiga, just a point behind league leaders Atlético Madrid.
