The FIFPRO award, first presented in 2005, recognizes the best top 11 football players for the entire year. The award is strictly voted on by professional footballers – over 21,000 men’s footballers from 70 countries.
Lautaro Martinez was not nominated, despite winning the Serie A, Italian Super Cup, Inter Milan Player of the Year, Serie A top scorer, Copa America winner, and top scorer.
Other nominated names that were excluded were Ademola Lookman and Serhou Guirassy, despite their impressive performances for club and country. Ademola Lookman scored crucial goals to help Nigeria reach the AFCON 2023 Final and help Atalanta win the UEFA Europa League. Serhou Guirassy helped Guinea reach the AFCON 2023 Quarter Final and with his 28 goals in the Bundesliga helped Stuttgart qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 14 years.
