John McGinn gave Aston Villa an early lead as Matty Cash crossed a ball into the box, which reached Ollie Watkins, who passed to McGinn to slot it home.
RB Leipzig were level in the 27th minute after Diego Carlos failed to clear his lines following a long ball by Nicolas Seiwald. Loïs Openda rounded off Emiliano Martinez before putting the ball into an empty net.
Jhon Durán came off the bench to give Aston Villa the lead in the 52nd minute, taking his tally to ten goals this season.
Durán thought he had doubled Villa’s advantage six minutes later, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
Leipzig drew level for the second time, with Openda in the midst of the action again, this time turning provider. Openda delivered a lovely cross into the box, which Christoph Baumgartner finished cleanly.
Lucas Digne almost got himself on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute with a well-taken shot, but Péter Gulácsi stood firm to deny him.
Openda missed a big chance to score his second of the night in the 82nd minute after capitalizing on a mistake by Pau Torres, but his shot was directed straight at Martinez.
Three minutes later, Openda was made to regret not taking his chance as Ross Barkley came off the bench to give Aston Villa the lead with his first shot of the game, securing the three points.
The result meant RB Leipzig have been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after suffering six losses in six games. However, Aston Villa sit third in the Champions League table with four wins, one draw, and one loss.
