Strong earthquake in the Pacific islands of Vanuatu: buildings collapsed, reports of deaths

A tsunami warning was issued following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake felt in Port Vila, the capital of the island nation of Vanuatu, east of Australia – and was later canceled.

It was reported that the US, French, British and New Zealand embassy buildings in the country were significantly damaged.

“There is extensive damage across the island, there is a building that has completely collapsed,” a journalist living in Vanuatu reported, saying he saw three seriously injured people receiving treatment. He added that the road leading to Port Vila was blocked by landslides caused by the earthquake.
