EFCC Counter Social Media Narrative of Dead Officer, Says Shooter is a Suspected Internet Fraudster

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission – EFCC— through its spokesperson Dele Oyewale has condemned the narratives surrounding the untimely death of one of its personnel, Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE II Aminu Sahabi Salisu who died on Friday.
According to the buzz on the social media, Salisu and some of his colleagues had gone to raid the house Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu in Akwa, Anambra State at 4a.m. which was alleged to be unauthorised.
However, the official met his doom upon arrival as the owner of the house who alleged that he thought the government officials were thieves owing to the hour and crime rate of the area, in defending his family, Ikechukwu had shot one to death and wounded one another.
The social media have been abuzz especially X platform where netizens justified the death of the official, accusing that the EFFC officials are known to go on unauthorized raids without warrants, some of the time beating up their victims, terrorizing families in the processes.
The EFCC negated the accusations in a statement on Sunday, affirming that the narratives was different from what took place at the crime scene, stating that its officer was murdered in cold blood while carrying out official duty.
“More worrisome is the fact that some faceless commentators are pitching their tents with an alleged criminal who unleashed terror on officers of the EFCC in their line of duty.
“There is no justification whatsoever to rationalise a murderous act. The milk of human kindness demands that a grieving family, Commission and nation should be spared the shenanigans of false narratives and conjectures on the death of the slain officer.”
Oyewale stated that Ikechukwu was a suspected internet fraudster and there were incriminating evidences found at his home such as a laptops, an iPad and recording devices.
The commission’s statement had read in part: “Salisu, alongside other investigators of the EFCC, were at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka,  Anambra State, to arrest some suspected internet fraudsters in the early hours of January 17. The operation was duly documented at the Anambra State Command Headquarters and Area Command of the Nigeria Police in line with operational protocols.
“The operation was initially smooth sailing with 37 suspected internet fraudsters already arrested at a two-storey building housing Ikechukwu and other occupants of the house.
“However, Ikechukwu, who sighted the investigators through a CCTV Camera mounted at his doorpost and who also confessed sighting them, declined to open his door for the investigators who politely demanded entrance to his apartment.
“Defying all the introduction and physical sighting of the investigators, he resorted to firing shots at them and killed Salisu in the process and wounded another officer detailed to conduct a search in his apartment.
“Preliminary investigations showed that Ikechukwu was involved in coding and online medical supplies of doubtful legitimacy. Two laptops, ipads, several recording devices were recovered from his apartment and his involvement in internet fraud is already established. Though currently in police custody owing to the murderous dimension of his case, the Commission will surely bring him to trial.” The spokesperson emphasised.
The commission warned the public not to be deceived by internet fraudsters claiming some of them are ritualists, kidnappers, armed robbers and so on.
The Oyewale also promised that the crime perpetuated against one of its gallant officers will not go unpunished, assuring Nigerians that the commission is bent on riding it of criminal vices and elements.
“The Commission will not fold its arms and allow any of its officers to be killed again in cold blood. As a law enforcement agency of repute, the EFCC is unrelenting in riding the nation of internet fraud and other acts of corruption.” The statement read
