England tennis star Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the ATP Auckland Open after suffering a back niggle. The tournament is set to begin on January 12, but even with a quick recovery, the 22-year-old will not be ready on time.
Currently ranked 56th in the world, Raducanu has been battling injuries and has struggled to replicate her 2021 US Open victory. She sustained a foot injury in September and only returned to action in 2024 after undergoing three surgeries.
The news was also shared on X by an account named “Emma Raducanu Fans,” which focuses on covering her career, it said;
“Unfortunately, Emma has withdrawn from Auckland with a back injury. She will now head to Melbourne to prepare for the Australian Open, which begins in two weeks. Hopefully, Emma has a speedy recovery and is back on court soon ❤️.”
The announcement brought about mixed reactions, with some fans expressing support and some showing concern.
@Gary5313723377: “Absolutely. Good luck, Emma 🤞. We know if you can get fit, the victories will follow 🎾💪.”
@daisyhillcods: “No probs, Emma. Please get yourself right. Love you as always.”
@karenwr75084451: “Such a shame. Back problems are not to be ignored. Very wise decision by Emma. Sad not to see her, but her health is the most important factor.”
@NeilMcDono10041: “I’m at the end of my tether with this girl. I wish her all the best, but I’m not going to be as interested in her as a player anymore. It’s just one step forward, five steps back. I saw Nadal play his entire career with injections in his foot, and she has a ‘niggle’?”
@OapilefGringo: “I give up on Raducanu.”
Emma Raducanu will aim to recover quickly and prepare for the Australian Open, which begins in two weeks.
