Cameroon legend Rigobert Song has been named head coach of the Central African Republic.
The appointment was announced on January 13 in the country’s capital, Bangui. Before the announcement, Song met with Cameroon’s Minister for the Promotion of Youth, Sport, and Physical Education, Héritier Doneng, as well as the country’s President, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, where he outlined his vision and plans.
Song faces a challenging task as he aims to guide the Central African Republic to their first-ever FIFA World Cup. The team currently sits second from the bottom in their qualification group, having earned just four points from four matches.
The players are reportedly low on confidence following five consecutive losses and their failure to qualify for AFCON 2024.
Song’s focus will be on building a winning mentality and fostering a positive atmosphere within the squad to enhance their competitiveness in future tournaments.
Details regarding the 48-year-old’s contract duration and salary have not yet been disclosed to the public.
