Egg extraction surgery, also known as egg retrieval, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes eggs from a woman’s ovaries:
Here’s what happens during egg retrieval:
Preparation
The woman is injected with medications to stimulate the development of multiple eggs and follicles.
Procedure
A needle is inserted through the vaginal wall into the ovary, and gentle suction is used to remove the eggs and fluid. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes.
Aftercare
Common side effects include cramping, bloating, constipation, spotting, and pain.
The eggs are then combined with sperm in a laboratory to create embryos, which are implanted into the woman’s uterus.
Egg retrieval is part of in vitro fertilization (IVF), a procedure that can be used for a number of reasons, including:
When tests can’t identify the cause of infertility
To preserve fertility before cancer treatments
When pregnancy poses a serious health risk or the woman doesn’t have a working uterus
