Antony Matheus dos Santos, popularly known as Antony, has had a fantastic start to life at Real Betis. The Brazilian winger has scored two goals and earned two Man of the Match awards in his first three starts for the club—against Celta Vigo and Genk. He also contributed to captain Isco’s goal against Athletic Bilbao in his debut match for Betis.
Meanwhile this is a contrast to his time at Manchester United, where he managed just one goal in 18 months.
Antony joined Real Betis on loan from Manchester United, though the deal does not include a buy option. However, if the 24-year-old shows consistency in his performance, the LaLiga side could consider buying him permanently.
Real Betis CEO Ramón Alarcón described Antony and the club as a “good chemistry “ in an interview with SER, where he stated:
“Why not keep Antony here next season? It’s a possibility.
“We send Manchester United all the moves and details of the player throughout the week so that they can see we are looking after their asset.”
“There is very good chemistry.”
After the UEFA Europa Conference League match against Genk, Antony stated;
“In my heart, I knew I would be very happy at Betis. I was sure about that.”
“This win goes to the fans—they never stop supporting us.”
Antony also became the first Real Betis player since the 2013/14 season to score in his first two away games across all competitions.
