Matchweek 24 in La Liga kicked off on Friday night as Girona welcomed Getafe to the Montilivi.
Girona came into this game knowing that three points would take them to the UEFA Europa Conference League places, while Getafe needed a win to create daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.
Getafe looked like the side more desperate to secure the three points, as they went ahead three minutes into the game through Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche.
Yangel Herrera equalized for Girona nine minutes into the second half after a nice pass from Ukrainian international Viktor Tsygankov, before calmly putting it past Paulo Gazzaniga.
Borja Mayoral restored Getafe’s lead in the 62nd minute, a goal that would be enough to give the visitors the three points.
Things went from bad to worse for Girona as they were reduced to ten men after Herrera was shown a red card, making it impossible for them to get back into the game.
The loss meant Getafe now has only one win in their last seven games in all competitions and are in danger of missing out on European qualification if things don’t change.
