Former Belgium international Toby Alderweireld had previously announced that he would retire at the end of the season. However, the 36-year-old sustained an injury during Royal Antwerp’s match against Standard Liège, which could force him into early retirement.
His club, Royal Antwerp, released an official statement:
“In the final phase of yesterday’s match against Standard, Toby Alderweireld left the field injured. Research has shown that he has a tear in the quadriceps. Recovery from such injuries often takes a considerable period of time, which unfortunately makes Toby’s appearance in the play-offs uncertain. From today, everything is focused on his rehabilitation.
“Wishing you a speedy recovery, Captain!”
Alderweireld also shared an emotional message on his Instagram story:
“I never expected this… Right now, I don’t have the words for this. What I do know is that I will do everything I can to wear that beautiful shirt one more time.”
“To be captain of the most beautiful club in the world one more time… It will be a tough battle against time, and I know I’m not on the winning side.”
“I want to thank everyone for the heartwarming messages and the support I’ve received. You are all fantastic!”
In 2023, Alderweireld played a crucial role in helping Royal Antwerp secure their first league title in 66 years, scoring the winner in the 94th minute. He also helped the club qualify for its first-ever UEFA Champions League group stage.
