Chelsea will be required to pay Manchester United £5 million if they choose not to trigger the buy-option clause for Jadon Sancho, The Athletic has confirmed.

The England international joined Chelsea in August on a season-long loan, which includes a mandatory buy-option clause of £25 million that must be triggered if the club finishes above 14th place in the Premier League.

Currently Chelsea are way above the 14th place.  The Blues sit in fourth place with nine league games remaining.

The BBC Sport reported that there is an agreement between the two clubs that allows Sancho to return to Manchester United but Chelsea will have to pay a £5m fine.

Sancho has struggled in front of goal, registering just one goal contribution in his last 18 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea.

Despite his poor attacking form, The Athletic reports that he has maintained a high level of professionalism, and Chelsea remain intent on triggering the obligation-to-buy clause.
