Spencer Cox, the governor of Utah and others have paid tribute to the family of Mia Love, former U.S Congresswoman who passed away on Sunday after battling with brain cancer.
Mia Love was the first Black Republican female elected to Congress and according to her family had peacefully died at 49, surrounded by her family.
Governor Cox revealed in a tribute described the deceased as a visionary leader whose friendship was reliable and would be sorely missed.
“We are heartbroken at this news. From the time we were mayors together I could always count on Mia as a true friend. Her legacy of service inspired all who knew her. We pray for her family and mourn with them.
“A true trailblazer and visionary leader, Mia inspired countless Utahns through her courage, grace, and unwavering belief in the American dream. Her legacy leaves a lasting, positive impact on our state. We will miss her deeply.”
The family of Mia love late on Sunday night had posted of her demise on X , revealing that she passed away in the presence of her loved ones.
The statement read: “With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today. She was in her home surrounded by family.
“In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward. We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences.
“We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.” The family announced
The former Utah congresswoman was born in New York to Haitian immigrants, made history in 2014 as the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House. She entered politics through local activism, eventually rising to national prominence. During her time in Congress, she fiercely defended Christians and unborn babies.
Love was diagnosed in 2022 and submitted to death after three year battle with glioblastoma .She joined a clinical trial at Duke that extended her life well past the original prognosis. She is survived by her husband Jason, three children, a granddaughter, and her parents.

The Former governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney wrote: “Heavy heart with the passing of my friend and colleague, Mia Love. Her energy, enthusiasm and wit made her a stand-out member of Congress. Her faith and fortitude made her a model for me and for countless others. We will dearly miss you, Mia.”
Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a former United State Congressman, Lee Zeldin: “Mia was such an amazingly beautiful person inside and out. Loyal, smart, fearless, and passionate about every aspect of life, Mia was a gift to the rest of us.
“My family is devastated to lose our dearest friend, but so grateful for every memory our families have made together.” He mourned
Mike Lee, a United State Senator from Utah: “This is truly heartbreaking Mia Love was an outstanding public servant and a dear friend Her passing leaves a deep, painful void
“Please join me in praying for the Love family and remembering Mia Love as a friend, trailblazer, congresswoman, wife, mother, and patriot.
“May she rest in peace, and may the great things she worked for in this life inspire the people of Utah—and all Americans—to better serve each other, our families, and our country.” He stated
Burgess Ownes, U.S. representative for Utah’s 4th congressional district: “I’m heartbroken to hear of Mia’s passing. She was a trailblazer, a faithful servant, bright light in so many lives, and a dear friend.
“Our Utah communities mourn with the Love family, and we pray that they find peace in Heavenly Father’s love and comfort, and in the love Mia brought to all.” He prayed
“Mia served Utah’s 4th District with distinction, bringing passion, energy, and unwavering dedication to everything she did. It is a profound honor to follow in her footsteps and build upon the foundation she laid.
“Today, while we grieve her loss, we also celebrate her tireless commitment to public service, her historic contributions, and the countless lives she touched through her work.” He added.
Deidre Henderson, the lieutenant governor of Utah: “Mia Love was a fearless leader, a history-maker, and a woman of deep conviction. Utah—and our nation—are better because of her courageous work and unwavering belief in the American Dream.
My heart is broken over the loss of my dear friend. Gabe and I send our prayers and love to her devoted family that she so cherished.” She mourned.
Justin Amash, former U.S. representative for Michigan: “Praying for your family. Even as you celebrate Mia’s life, I know you must also be feeling profound pain and loss.
May God watch over you and bless you with strength and comfort. May Mia’s memory be eternal.” He prayed.
