Kenyan Police And Others Assault Brother’s Ex-Wife For Refusing To Take Part In His Burial Ceremony

A viral video has shown the footage of a Kenyan woman Mellen Mogaka, who was assaulted by a member of the police force and others, at the grave side of her ex-husband for refusing to throw soil into the grave.

The former husband’s family had requested her to bring the kids to bury their dad according to Abagusii culture, however, she was beaten for refusing to be part of the ceremony.

According to police report, the incidence happened on Friday at Kiambere area, Mwongorisi sub-location of Nyamira County.

The office of the Inspector General, National Police Headquarter, Nairobi confirmed the incidence in a statement on Monday, stating that three persons have been arrested in regards the assault.

The Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga expressed regret: “the incidence is not only unfortunate but also deeply regrettable, as it is devoid of civility and basic human dignity.

“The victim has since being located and the three suspects were swiftly arrested, they remain in custody pending processing and arraignment.” The statement read in part.

Eye witnesses affirmed that police officer from Nyabisimba in Nyamira was among those spotted beating the deceased ex-wife on accounts that she refused to throw soil to the grave of her ‘former’ husband.

Mogaka had brought her kids to bury their father in accordance with Abagusii tradition. The father had requested her mainly because, the man’s other wife, a Luo, was childless.

The police officer, an uncle to the deceased, assaulted her when she restrained from throwing soil to the grave, but resisted because she was in another marriage and had parted ways with the deceased.

Mogaka’s tormentors unleashed further assault on her by following her to the tea plantation, pulling and beating her — the crime being, she was not ready to throw soil into the grave.

It was reported that she was badly injured and has been taken to the hospital for treatment.
