Well, it is all because a lot of us either have short memory or are deliberately mischievous.
If not, wherever democracy, rule of law, anti corruption fight and their likes are being discussed, Obasanjo should not be close to the venue by at least a thousand miles.
Before I open a few of his anti democratic, anti rule of law and pro-corruption files, let me repeat without repentance that President Tinubu did the right thing by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers state that had no government for over a year as declared by the country’s apex court.
Obasanjo backed the Uba brothers to abduct sitting governor in Anambra state, Dr Chris Ngige.
I watched the report of the abduction live on AIT that day.
It was executed by Chris Uba, Obasanjo’s hatchet man in Anambra state. It was on July 10, 2003.
It was a 12 hour civilian coup to overthrow the governor. The whole of Awka was under siege as security operatives were completely under the control of the two Ubas while the governor duly elected by the people was strapped naked of the state’s security guard.
On November 6, 2006, Chris Uba, with the support of President Obasanjo orchestrated the removal of Mr Peter Giringori Obi as Governor of same Anambra state.
In those days, before the saintly Jonathan came and forced such cases to be heard by the supreme court because PDP was losing at the appeal court, the appeal court was the final arbiter in such cases and so on Feb 9, 2007, the court justly returned Obi to office, declaring justly his removal as illegal.
That removal had the full support of Obasanjo.
Ten months before Obi’s illegal removal, Sen Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, the present Otun Olubadan was removed by PDP thugs led by Lateef Salako popularly known as Elewe-omo on January 12, 2006.
Elewe-omo and his thugs drove elected legislators away under the protection of the police as instructed by the then Commander-in-Chief, Olusegun Obasanjo and the thug used the gavel to pronounce the governor’s impeachment.
I was in Ibadan the day that unpardonable sacrilege against democracy was committed.
In December, 2006, the court ruled that his removal was illegal and so he was returned as governor.
Alao Akala, his deputy, who had become Obasanjo’s favourite through Adedibu, the man many people in Oyo state still like his devilish style of politics was reluctant to vacate the illegal office of the governor he was holding for Adedibu and Obasanjo but he left eventually and returned as deputy governor, the president’s eye in Oyo state.
Adedibu had sinned by standing against Obasanjo’s third term agenda.
Fayose’s impeachment which also orchestrated by him was also later declared illegal by the court.
Under Obasanjo’s presidency, Fubara would have been removed even by a roadside thug if the President so wished.
Obasanjo also wanted to be a third term president.
And members of the Senate including my late uncle, late Sen James Olagunju Kolawole said that they rejected the money he offered them to amend the constitution to make provision for a third term for him.
We saw the naira filled Ghana-Must-Go bags on tv on the floor of the senate.
Obasanjo also made serving governors use their respective state fund to supportbthe building of his personal property, the Obasanjo library but today, he is an anti corruption czar. Laughable.
Under Obasanjo, $60bn was spent to procure darkness for Nigeria and that was why he stopped writing letters against fPMB that day the Daura born General asked ‘Where iz da fower?’.
Obasanjo seized Lagos LG allocation because Tinubu, as Governor created Local Government Development Areas, LCDAs, not new Local Government Areas which can only be created by an Act of Parliament at the centre.
And after supreme court ruled on October 8, 2004 that he had no such power, he did not release the fund until he left office. It was his successor, Umaru Musa Yar’adua whose death el-Rufai mocked that released the fund yet throughout the time of Obasanjo’s lawlessness, Tinubu, as governor did not owe any local government or state government worker a day’s wage.
Obasanjo is not fit to discuss democracy, rule of law and all that if we are a people who are honest and have memory.
But because he knows that a lot of us including Peter Obi who he illegally removed from office through Uba are hypocrites, he continues to parade himself as one who upheld rule of law, fought against tyrannyand corruption and respected democracy when he was in charge.
