Emma Raducanu’s Miami Open title charge came to an end in the quarterfinals as she fell to world number four Jessica Pegula. The 31 year old secured a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 victory on Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Stadium, booking her place in the semifinals.
Raducanu led 5-2 in the second set but had to call the doctor during the same period. Despite putting in a strong performance, Pegula’s dominant start in the third set proved decisive, propelling her to victory.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Pegula said, “It was tough. I played a good first set, had a little letdown in the second, got it back, went up 2-0 in the tiebreak, but then it kind of flipped. She started moving the ball really well, serving well… sometimes it just happens. But I just wanted to come out in the third really strong, really quick, and just kind of jump on her and not keep the third set too close.”
The American also expressed her excitement about playing in Miami, adding, “I love playing here, I love playing at home, I love getting wins in the Dolphins’ stadium. I always play really well here, and I’m hoping the third time’s the charm. I want to make it to that final so bad, and I’ll give it another shot tomorrow night.”
Pegula will face 19-year-old Alexandra Eala in the semifinals after the young Filipino stunned world number two Iga Świątek 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
