NNAMANI vs. AKPABIO
When Olusegun Obasanjo became consumed by power and sought a third term in 2006, the entire country turned to the Senate for salvation. The burden fell on one great man—Senator Ken Nnamani, President of the 5th Senate. At great personal risk to his career and life, he stood strong, putting the country first.
Nnamani ensured that the May 16, 2006, Senate proceedings were televised live, much to the displeasure of the powerful forces backing Obasanjo.
Why did he do that? Before the crucial debate, Nnamani directed all senators to return home and consult their constituents before taking a position. When the time came, he insisted on live coverage of the proceedings, forcing senators who had secretly pledged allegiance to OBJ to reconsider their stance. That singular act of transparency shattered Obasanjo’s third-term bid.
Had it not been for Nnamani’s courage, Obasanjo would have become Nigeria’s Paul Biya, clinging to power indefinitely. But Nnamani chose COUNTRY FIRST. That was patriotism at its finest.
Now, imagine for a moment that this historic decision was left in the hands of today’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. Would the outcome have been the same?
OBJ would have secured LIFE PRESIDENCY!
The 10th Senate: A Chamber of Self-Interest
The present 10th Senate leadership has shown that personal gain outweighs national interest. Using a mere voice vote to pass a bill with grave consequences for democracy is a blatant betrayal of public trust. The move to suspend or dissolve the democratically elected government in Rivers State is an alarming overreach—one that sets a dangerous precedent.
Are we witnessing the early signs of another third-term agenda?
Can this Akpabio-led Senate be trusted to stand firm for democracy, like Nnamani did? Your guess is as good as mine.
Long Live Senator Ken Nnamani—The Hero of Our Democracy!
