Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt made history on Thursday night, becoming the first club from Norway to reach the semi-final of a European competition after a dramatic win over Italian giants Lazio.
The Norwegian champions survived a late scare to advance 3-2 on penalties, following a 3-3 draw on aggregate across both legs.
Coming into the second leg with a 2-0 advantage, Bodo/Glimt saw their lead evaporate after a first-half goal from Valentín Castellanos and a stoppage-time strike by Tijjani Noslin forced the tie into extra time.
Lazio took the lead on aggregate for the first time when Boulaye Dia struck nine minutes into extra time. But with Norwegian hopes beginning to fade, Andreas Helmersen levelled the tie with a crucial goal that brought the aggregate score to 3-3.
Lazio tried to avoid penalties, but Bodo/Glimt held firm and forced the game into a shootout.
Goalkeeper Nikita Khaikin was the hero, saving two penalties, while Loum Tchaouna’s effort went wide.
It was a disappointing night for Lazio, who were considered one of the favourites to win the competition.
Bodo/Glimt will now face English side Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final.
