Former Manchester United player and current Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic didn’t hold back when speaking about André Onana, describing him as one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.

When asked about Onana’s recent comments, Matic responded: “I respect everyone, but to say that, then you need to get the answer. If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history, you need to take care with what you’re talking.”

He went further to compare the Cameroonian international to three of the club’s former number one: “If David de Gea or Peter Schmeichel or [Edwin] van der Sar said that, then I would question myself. But if you are one of the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history, then he needs to show something before he says such things. So we will see.”

Manchester United will take on Lyon on Thursday, April 10, in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final.

Onana had earlier told journalists after Sunday’s derby defeat to Manchester City that the Red Devils are favourites against Lyon. He said: “Of course it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them.”

André Onana has conceded 53 goals in 41 matches for Manchester United this season. In his first season at the club, he conceded 83 goals in 51 appearances.
