Newcastle Complete League Double Over Manchester United For The First Time In Premier League Era

Manchester United were thrashed 4-1 by Newcastle United. The Magpies were clear favourites coming into the game, having been on a great run of form since clinching the League Cup at Wembley. However, only a few people expected such an embarrassing result for United.

Newcastle went ahead in the 24th minute after an exquisite pass from Alexander Isak found Sandro Tonali. The Italian made no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net.

Alejandro Garnacho drew Manchester United level in the 36th minute. Diogo Dalot was the architect of the goal, setting up Garnacho, who calmly put the ball past Nick Pope.

The second half had a different complexion as Newcastle opened the floodgates and put three past Manchester United.

Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the lead for the second time just four minutes after the restart, and 15 minutes later, he made it a brace.

Bruno Guimarães ensured there was no way back for the Red Devils by scoring Newcastle’s fourth in the 77th minute. Altay Bayındır received a pass back from Yoro and attempted to send the ball into midfield, only to play it straight into Joelinton’s head. The deflection landed at the feet of Guimarães, who fired it into the net.

The result means Manchester United have just 10 wins in 32 Premier League games. They languish in 14th place, having conceded 45 goals with a goal difference of minus 7.

Newcastle sit 4th in the Premier League and could move into third if they win their outstanding match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

They have beaten Manchester United home and away in the league for the first time in 96 years.
