Oluwo Leads Asr Prayer, Promotes Islamic Unity in Yorubaland
The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, made headlines once again by leading the Asr prayer at the central mosque of Jamaat Taawunil Muslimeen in Iwo, reinforcing his commitment to promoting Islam and unity among Yoruba Muslims.
Dressed in Yoruba cultural attire, the traditional ruler stood not only as a custodian of Yoruba culture but also as a symbol of Islamic faith. The prayer session, attended by clerics, community leaders, and faithful from across Iwoland, was described as spiritually uplifting and deeply symbolic.
Oba Akanbi, known for his strong public embrace of Islamic values, has often spoken about the need to distance the traditional stool from idol worship. “Islam is a part of our identity, and the traditional stool has nothing to do with idols,” he stated. “As a king, it is my duty to uphold the spiritual and cultural values that bind our people together.”
Community members praised the Oluwo’s leadership, with many calling his public display of faith a bold move toward reinforcing Islam’s presence in Yorubaland despite criticism.
