Serhou Guirassy hat-trick wasn’t enough as Borussia Dortmund were knocked out of the Champions League

Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win over Barcelona in the second leg wasn’t enough to see them through into the semi-final, as they lost to the Spanish side 5-3 on aggregate.

Serhou Guirassy’s hat-trick in the match—and his performance generally in the Champions League—didn’t go unnoticed, and if that was an audition to get signed by the European powerhouses, he already passed it.

Borussia Dortmund were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute after Pascal Gross was brought down in the box by Wojciech Szczesny. Guirassy stepped up and scored through a well-chipped Panenka.

Guirassy made it two for Dortmund four minutes after the break, which ignited the Signal Iduna Park with hopes that a comeback was possible, but Dortmund’s hope was dashed when Ramy Bensebaini put the ball into his own net in the 54th minute.

Despite the setback, Dortmund were determined not to back down, and they got the ball into the back of the net in the 76th minute through Guirassy. The goal made Guirassy become the first African to score a hat-trick in the Champions League quarter-final.

Three minutes later, Dortmund had the ball in the back of the net through Julian Brandt, but this time it was ruled out for offside.

The German side kept attacking, but Barcelona held on to reach the semi-final. It was not to be for Dortmund, but the performance would give their fans something to remember. Meanwhile, Guirassy—on a personal basis—could be proud of his performance in this year’s Champions League. He goes out as the competition’s top scorer with 13 goals to his name.

The Blaugrana will play the winner between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in the semi-final.
