Thomas Müller is expected to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season as the club has no plans to extend his contract.
The 35-year-old was keen on a one-year extension, but Bayern have decided against renewing his deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The club’s decision is understandable, given that Müller is one of the squad’s highest earners yet has made just nine starts in 23 Bundesliga games this season and only three in 10 Champions League matches.
Bayern would like him to remain at the club in an administrative role, seeing him as a great ambassador for both the club and German football. However, it is unclear if he will retire or continue playing, with MLS clubs reportedly interested.
Müller holds the record for the most appearances for Bayern, having played 742 matches. He has scored 247 goals and provided a record 273 assists.
His trophy haul includes 12 Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokal titles, two Champions League trophies, eight German Super Cups, two FIFA Club World Cups, and two UEFA Super Cups.
Regardless of his next move, Müller will forever be regarded as a Bayern Munich legend.
