Tussle, Tradition Or History? Controversial Debate About Alaafin Of Oyo And Ooni Of Ife Greeting Posture At The Government House In Ibadan

In an ongoing controversial debate on social media regarding the alleged pride of the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade and Ooni of Ife ,HM Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, netizens argued on the power tussle between the two kings.

Circulating video footage and Photos shows when the Oba of Ife arrived at an event in Oyo state, organized by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, all other kings present stood up to greet him, however, Alaafin of Oyo was firmly sitted while he shook his counterpart’s hand.

This has sparked a debate where social media users believe that the Alaafin of Oyo is superior to the Ooni of Ife and vice versa.

@DaveBlackScopion: “OOni is the King of all Kings that come out from the house of Oduduwa. King that trace it’s root to Oduduwa be it Dein of Agbor or Obi of Onitsha, Oba of Benin, Eleke of Eko etc… OOni is their Father. And oyo knows this but Oyo is stubborn, full of pride and anger. Sango spirit.”

@OmoArogbatesun: “His Imperial Majesty, Oba Babatunde Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II is not engaged in any supremacy battle with anyone. God and history have established the Oonirisa as the leader of the Yoruba race. Therefore, there is no argument or dispute.”

@olaideazeez: “The Alafin stool is not a small stool. Historically the Alafin is mightier than the Ooni. The rivalry between the two kings has been in existence from ancient of days. The new king just followed suit based on history.”

@DPrinceofpeac: “this new Alafin of Oyo is not matured at all very disappointing, title seniority aside , courtesy demand whenever anyone is greeting you while standing Don’t sit to greet them no matter how small they’re , all this London kings are too mumu.”

@damola-ade77: “I understand perfectly the supremacy battle, Oyo was once an Empire, Ife was only a Kingdom. Even though all Yorubas agree that we are from Ile-Ife, if you become an Empire, it will be hard for you to submit to a Kingdom moving forward.”

Akinsjnr3: “Even though Ooni of Ife is superior, Alaafin can never stand to greet Ooni. In Yoruba land, Obas doesn’t prostrate for anybody, therefore, what they do is just stand up and greet a senior Oba to them which is indirectly prostrating for them. Alaafin is a first class king.”

2Hyelasakda: “Some kings don’t stand up for anybody. This includes the Alaafin of Oyo, the Oba of Benin and the Olu of Warri. The Ooni of Ife isn’t supposed to stand too but he chose a different style of doing things.”
