Eagle Square Abuja Stand Empty On Workers’ Day

Eagle Square Abuja, the traditional venue where Nigerian workers in and around the Federal Capital Territory are expected to converge for the celebration of the May Day stand empty, manned only by the security, no crowds, no celebration, nothing.

The emptiness reveals a collapse of confidence in the government’s commitment to workers to truly represent their interest.

Given the economic challenges, and the struggles many Nigerians face just to make ends meet, it is understandable that workers might feel there’s little to celebrate, what with big corporations declaring massive naira denominated profits while SME and most workers cannot boast of improved conditions.

Gone are the days when worker’s day excite Nigerian workers, people now use the day to rest, as  working to earn close to nothing with all the ridiculous prices of stuff out there is exhausting.

Looks more like all hope is lost, workers are not happy and celebration requires energy
