Ligue 1 Considers Radical Playoff Format to Curb PSG Dominance

Top officials in French football are reportedly exploring a major format overhaul that could reshape Ligue 1 as we know it.

According to multiple reports, the league is considering introducing a playoff system in which the top four teams at the end of the regular season would compete in a mini-tournament to determine the Ligue 1 champion. The proposal aims to make the title race more competitive and reduce the dominance of Paris Saint-Germain, who have claimed 11 of the last 13 league titles.

Under the suggested format, the first-placed team would face the fourth-placed side, while the second and third would go head-to-head in the semifinals. The winners would then meet in a final to decide the league champion.

This idea is believed to be part of a wider initiative to give other traditional powerhouses like Lyon, Marseille, and Monaco a better shot at winning the league. While some stakeholders and fans have welcomed the proposal, it has faced resistance—particularly from PSG, who stand to lose the most from the change.

In addition to the playoff talks, there are also plans to restructure the administrative format of the league. According to GOAL The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), which currently oversees both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, could  be replaced with a new governing framework modelled after the Premier League’s independent structure in England.

PSG have already secured the 2024/25 Ligue 1 title, sitting 19 points clear at the top of the table.
