Ogun State Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has ordered the release of 100 inmates from various custodial centers across the state.

This move aims to decongest the prisons and provide relief to those who have been awaiting trial for extended periods.

The released inmates are from different custodial centers, including:

  • Sagamu: 36 inmates
  • Oba: 20 inmates
  • Ibara Custodial Centre (Abeokuta): 12 inmates
  • Ilaro Custodial Centre: 16 inmates
  • Ijebu Ode Custodial Centre: 16 inmates

Justice Dipeolu explained that the releases were based on health or compassionate grounds.
Many of the inmates had spent prolonged periods in custody without active prosecution or progress in their cases.

This initiative is expected to:

  • Reduce prison overcrowding
  • Provide relief to inmates who have been awaiting trial for extended periods
  • Improve living conditions for remaining inmates

The Ogun State Chief Judge’s decision to release 100 inmates is a step towards addressing prison overcrowding and ensuring justice is served.
This move demonstrates the judiciary’s commitment to upholding human rights and promoting humane treatment of inmates.
