Scott McTominay’s brilliance delivers Napoli second Scudetto title in three years

Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku’s goals gave Napoli the Scudetto as they beat Cagliari to claim a second Serie A trophy in three years.

The Serie A title was McTominay’s first career league triumph. The 26-year-old was in tears after the final whistle. He was named the most valuable player in the league. McTominay was Napoli’s second highest goal scorer in the Italian league with 12 goals and six assists. He said during the championship celebrations: “I’m lost for words. It’s incredible, you know—the sacrifice that every single player in the group has put forward to the cause. And the people deserve it because they’ve been behind us from day one, and for me to come and experience this is a dream.”

After the match, there were warm embraces between Antonio Conte and club president Aurelio De Laurentiis. Conte became the first man to win Serie A with three different clubs. He has now won the title five times as a manager.

Following the win, Conte stated: “It happened again, and it’s something wonderful. When we got to the stadium, it was honestly difficult to get in, as I don’t know how many people were there. I had a slight thought—if we let these people down, it’d be something we carried with us for a long time. All the credit goes to the boys. Winning in Naples is difficult; these boys are doing it for the second time in two years. They are serious boys—you don’t leave a team that always plays to win.”

Conte deserves full credit for the job he has done in his first season, taking the club from tenth place—despite losing Victor Osimhen at the start of the season and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January—to Serie A champions.
