Atlético Madrid are close to reaching an agreement with Atalanta for the signing of Matteo Ruggeri, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The 22 year old is already an Italy international. He primarily plays as a left-back, but his versatility allows him to operate as a right-back, wing-back, and even as a left-sided centre-back, according to Spanish outlet Marca.

The Atalanta defender featured in 36 matches last season, posting solid numbers across various metrics: 0.27 expected goals, 0.59 expected assists, 87.1% pass accuracy, 24 chances created, and 60% successful dribbles. Defensively, he recorded a 61.5% tackle success rate, won 59.8% of his duels, and made 124 ball recoveries.

Ruggeri also demonstrated discipline throughout the campaign, picking up just two yellow cards and no red cards in Serie A.
