Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement with Villarreal for the signing of Álex Baena. The deal is worth €45 million plus an additional €5 million in add-ons.

Baena has been on Atlético’s radar since the start of the transfer window. The club had initially tried to sign him in time for the FIFA Club World Cup but failed to reach an agreement with Villarreal then.

Baena primarily operates as a left midfielder but is also capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, defensive midfielder, left winger, and occasionally as a striker. He featured in 32 LaLiga matches last season, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists.

He becomes Atlético’s fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Clément Lenglet, Johnny Cardoso, and Matteo Ruggeri.

According to Marca journalist David G. Medina, Atlético Madrid plan to invest nearly €200 million in net spending during this transfer window.
