A retired Superintendent of Police has sparked public outrage and institutional scrutiny after rejecting a ₦2 million retirement benefit, calling the amount an insult after 35 years of service to the Nigeria Police Force.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, the retired officer, who left the force on October 1, 2023, decried the total sum of ₦3 million communicated to him by the Nigeria Police Pension Board—₦1 million in arrears and ₦2 million as his full terminal benefit.
Describing the amount as “paltry” and “disrespectful,” the officer expressed deep frustration with the pension system, drawing attention to the plight of countless police retirees across the country.
Reacting to the video, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an urgent and thorough investigation into the claims. A statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the IGP has tasked NPF Pensions Limited to examine the matter and identify any lapses in the pension process.
“The IGP has ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations raised… and has tasked NPF Pensions Limited to urgently examine the claims, identify possible lapses, and ensure appropriate action is taken,” Adejobi said.
He added that the IGP remains committed to the welfare of all officers—serving and retired—and acknowledged the importance of constructive feedback in driving systemic reform.
“Timely and adequate pension administration is crucial to sustaining morale and institutional integrity. While efforts have been made to improve the pension system, feedback like this is vital to identifying gaps,” the statement noted.
Egbetokun reassured retired and serving officers, along with their families, of the Force’s dedication to building a pension structure that truly honours the sacrifices of its personnel.
“The IGP urges all stakeholders to remain calm and patient as the investigation proceeds. The Force remains committed to finding lasting solutions,” Adejobi concluded
