English side Crystal Palace has been relegated from the UEFA Europa League to the UEFA Europa Conference League following a breach of UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules. The decision was made by UEFA’s board responsible for monitoring European football.
According to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace will appeal the decision.
Meanwhile, BBC Sport reports that Nottingham Forest will take Palace’s place in the Europa League until the appeal is heard and its outcome is determined.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish expressed his disappointment over the decision. He said:
“You win a cup, actually win something for the first time in your history.”
“Somebody said to me it’s like winning the lottery, going to the counter and you don’t get the prize.”
“I think most right-minded football fans will see what a terrible injustice this is for the football club, one that I dearly hope somebody can remedy because I do believe that nobody in football wants to see this.”
