University of Calabar-UNICAL- has reportedly asked 300 Dentistry Students to change school or learn trade, due to the school’s accreditation troubles.
The directive was issued after a meeting between the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the affected students, and their parents.
During the meeting, the university acknowledged that it had admitted far more students than the quota approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
Students have expressed shock and disappointment, stating that they had already spent millions on tuition, accommodation, textbooks, and other expenses before being abruptly sent home, while calling out for help
One of the student’s summation on X read: “UNICAL class made up of 60 students recently wrote their final professional exams “part V,” and out of this very number, 32 students passed, and their names were sent to MDCN for verification.
“However, this list was rejected reasons being that the schools quota for graduation is 10, which is only provisional, stating that the number is three times the required.
“It was on this premise that our Vice chancellor “proff florence obi” together with the Provost of the medical college and the dean faculty of dentistry were summoned by MDCN to Abuja to explain the number and also provide a list of all dental students for indexing.
“On the realization of our highly outrageous numbers, they withdraw the provisional accreditation prompting the recent move by the school to move all dental students to other dental school around the country.”
Another one wrote in disbelief: “The university has pretty much asked us to find our way.
“Over 300 dental students at the University of Calabar are being asked to transfer to other institutions because the university admitted more dental students than permitted.
“I’ve spent 5 years already. This news isterri”
An affected undergraduate stated: “Sir this is so sad, people had to hold me from doing something stupid to myself yesterday after the provost and VC told us to find our way to other schools, I was admitted in this school since 2019 I have paid all my charges, got distinction in biochemistry in my first mb”
Reports also indicate that the Vice Chancellor warned against any form of protest over the matter, further fueling anger and frustration among the affected students.
