One Confirmed Dead As Building Foundation Collapses In Abuja

A 25-year-old laborer has been confirmed dead after the foundation of a building under construction collapsed in the Garki area of Abuja.

The tragic incident which occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Monday at the premises of Radio House, Area 8, Garki according to a statement issued by Head of Public Affairs, Emergency Management Department (FEMD), FCT chapter, Nkechi Isa.

According to a statement from the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), the incident occurred on Monday evening when a foundation wall caved in as two workers were excavating approximately seven feet underground. While one of the trapped laborers was successfully rescued alive, the other tragically lost his life. The Federal Fire Service was among the first responders, arriving promptly at the scene to assist in the rescue operation.

The acting Director-General of FEMD, Abdulrahman Mohammed, called for strict adherence to safety regulations at construction sites to avoid similar unfortunate incidents.

Mr. Mohammed noted the importance of professionals in the building sector and urged developers to shun quacks.

He also urged residents to always call the 112-emergency toll-free number in case of any disaster.
