President Donald Trump has placed the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deployed the National Guard in response to what he describes as rampant crime, despite recent data indication that crime in D.C. is at a 30-year low.
Vice president JD Vance in support of Trump via X after the president federalized D.C claimed that the crime is high, making it unsafe place for the residents, in his words: “The rampant crime and lawlessness in Washington have turned our nation’s capital into an utter disgrace.
“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the American people will have a capital they can safely visit and that they can be proud of once more.” Vance added.
However, the D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is reportedly furious that she must essentially surrender to the federal takeover, as she has no grounds to challenge President Trump’s federalization of D.C. police due to the declared crime emergency.
In a post on X she eulogized the city stating: “Washington, DC is a beautiful city. DC is home to 700K people and welcomes millions every year. We have the #1 park system, fantastic public schools, and a tremendous public transportation system.
“And we are at a 30-year low in violent crime. It’s important for all who live here and visit to know how beautiful our city is and how proud we are of all that we’ve accomplished.”
D.C. Police Union Chairman Gregory Pemberton, in an interview on Fox News supported Trump’s takeover of the department when asked if the move was necessary, he stated: “We completely agree with the President that the crime in the District of Columbia is out of control and something needs to be done.
Adding that: “The fact that we need help from federal law enforcement and maybe even the National Guard should not, as a surprise.”
