Jose Mourinho Confirms Talks with Benfica About Becoming Head Coach

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he is in discussions to take on the role of head coach at Benfica. Speaking to journalists, Mourinho revealed that the Portuguese club approached him before he boarded a flight, asking if he would be interested in leading the team.

“What I can confirm is that, before I caught the plane, Benfica reached out to me and asked if I was interested in coaching them,” Mourinho stated. “I said yes. I told them that I was abroad at the moment, but that I would be happy to have a conversation with them when I returned to Portugal.”

The 60-year-old, known for his highly successful career across several top clubs, emphasized his desire for balance. “My nature is to want to coach, but I also told myself that I needed to be emotionally balanced. I didn’t want to rush into saying yes to any club, just because I am a workaholic,” Mourinho explained.

When pressed further on his interest in Benfica, he added, “When they asked me if I wanted to coach Benfica, I didn’t think twice. It interests me.”

Mourinho’s potential return to Benfica would mark a significant moment in his career, as it would be his first time back at the club in 25 years. He began his career in coaching at Benfica, and the club is reportedly eager to secure his services. Should the talks progress positively, Mourinho is expected to sign a contract that would keep him at Benfica until June 2027.
