Nigerian representatives Remo Stars SC and Rivers United have qualified for the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. Remo Stars secured their spot with a dominant 5-0 victory over Comoros side Zilimadjou. The Nigerian champions will now face Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round.
This promises to be a formidable challenge as they take on one of the continent’s most experienced, financially backed, and well-run teams. Sundowns were last season’s Champions League finalists and Africa’s representatives at the FIFA Club World Cup.
On the other hand, Rivers United had a tougher time, narrowly defeating Jeunesse Sportive de Kinshasa from the Democratic Republic of Congo, winning 1-0 on aggregate. The 2022 Nigerian League champions will face Mozambican side Black Bulls in the next round.
