In a renewed effort to promote a cleaner and healthier environment, ten local government chairmen across Lagos State have intensified their environmental sanitation campaigns, a Lagos Reporters investigation has revealed.
Findings from the investigation indicate that these councils have scaled up activities aimed at clearing refuse, reclaiming public spaces from illegal dumpsites, and improving waste management systems across their communities. These efforts have not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of several areas but also contributed to better public health conditions.
Among the most active councils in maintaining clean and healthy environments, as identified by the Lagos Reporters investigation team, are Lagos Island Local Government, Agege Local Government, Ojo Local Government, Mushin Local Government, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, Bariga LCDA, Eti Osa LGA, Lagos Island East LCDA, Anuwo Odofin LGA, Somolu LGA and Apapa Iganmu LCDA.
Residents who spoke with Lagos Reporters commended the visible improvements in waste management within their localities, describing the initiatives as a welcome development. They, however, appealed to the chairmen to sustain the momentum and enforce strict penalties on residents and traders who violate sanitation laws or turn cleared spaces into refuse dumps.
Meanwhile, the Lagos Reporters investigation also uncovered that some councils have done little or nothing to address mounting waste challenges in their jurisdictions. Lagos Reporters hereby issues a final warning to such councils, noting that a comprehensive list supported by photographic and video evidence will be published to expose those failing in their environmental responsibilities if they do not take urgent action to clean up their council areas.
