A cement-laden truck from Dangote Group suffered brake failure on a steep hill near Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, crashing through the main gate and killing eight people, including five adult males, two adult females, a male child, a pregnant woman, and a student, around 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps—FRSC– confirmed the instant fatalities amid chaos involving pedestrians and vehicles.
FRSC Sector Commander in Ondo State, Samuel Ibitoye stated that the truck ran into a barricade near Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, before crashing. “No fewer than eight people died — five males, two females, and one male child,” he said. Ibitoye advised motorists to always ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to obey traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
Witnesses said the crash occurred when a truck carrying bags of cement lost control along the Owo–Akungba–Ikare Expressway and rammed into roadside shops, killing several people instantly.
This marks the fourth major Dangote truck crash on the same route in four years, resulting in at least 25 deaths, with investigations pointing to overloaded vehicles and poor maintenance on the treacherous terrain.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the government hospital morgue in Akungba.
